The Room That Knew
FABLES IV of VII

By then, the room had learned the order of things.
The glass set down too hard first.
Then the quiet.
Then the quiet.
Then his voice.
Low enough at the start
To make everyone listen for it.
Low enough at the start
To make everyone listen for it.
The dining room was narrow and formal in the way
Some unhappy rooms become formal:
Some unhappy rooms become formal:
Polished wood.
Drawn curtains, and
Chairs pushed carefully beneath the table.
Drawn curtains, and
Chairs pushed carefully beneath the table.
A bowl of fruit sat in the center, untouched.
Everything had its place.
Everything had learned to stay there.
Everything had learned to stay there.
The children knew where to look.
Not at him.
At the tablecloth.
At their plates.
At the slow gathering of water beneath his glass.
At their plates.
At the slow gathering of water beneath his glass.
Their mother knew the timing too.
How to answer lightly.
How to keep her hands moving.
How to stand before standing became dangerous.
How to sit before sitting looked like defiance.
How to keep her hands moving.
How to stand before standing became dangerous.
How to sit before sitting looked like defiance.
Anyone visiting would have called it tension.
Only that.
A family under strain.
A difficult season.
A difficult season.
Too much pressure.
Too little money.
Too little money.
The ordinary names people give a pattern
When they prefer not to see its shape.
When they prefer not to see its shape.
The room knew better.
It knew which chair scraped back first.
Which cabinet door closed under a shaking hand.
Which jokes arrived too early, offered like cloth
Over something bleeding.
Which cabinet door closed under a shaking hand.
Which jokes arrived too early, offered like cloth
Over something bleeding.
Once, the oldest child dropped a spoon,
And everybody at the table startled.
After that, nothing was reached for
Unless it could be held firmly.
And everybody at the table startled.
After that, nothing was reached for
Unless it could be held firmly.
Even the dog had learned.
He slept beneath the sideboard during dinner,
Crawling out only after the front door closed
And the House began its long, careful exhale.
Crawling out only after the front door closed
And the House began its long, careful exhale.
Years passed in this arrangement.
The children grew taller.
The children grew taller.
The table was refinished once.
The curtains were changed.
The curtains were changed.
A different fruit bowl appeared.
Still, every object entered the room
Already knowing what would be asked of it.
Already knowing what would be asked of it.
Hold the plate.
Catch the spill.
Reflect nothing back.
Catch the spill.
Reflect nothing back.
Then one evening, a guest stayed too long.
An aunt, warmed by red wine and family loyalty
Kept talking past dessert.
Kept talking past dessert.
The children had already gone quiet
In the practiced way of children
Who can feel weather forming inside a house.
In the practiced way of children
Who can feel weather forming inside a house.
His hand struck the table
Before it struck anything else.
Before it struck anything else.
Hard enough to knock over the water glass.
Hard enough that the aunt stopped speaking.
Hard enough that the aunt stopped speaking.
For a second
No one moved.
No one moved.
Water spread across the white cloth
Passed through the candlelight, and
Reached the mother's wrist.
Passed through the candlelight, and
Reached the mother's wrist.
Then,
Very calmly,
She lifted her napkin and began blotting it.
The aunt stared at her.
Very calmly,
She lifted her napkin and began blotting it.
The aunt stared at her.
At the children.
At the room.
And for the first time,
At the room.
And for the first time,
What lived there had to share its outline.
Years later.
After the house was sold.
The new owners replaced the table.
After the house was sold.
The new owners replaced the table.
But when they pulled up the old rug,
There it was beneath one chair leg:
There it was beneath one chair leg:
A dark ring.
Faint and permanent.
Faint and permanent.
Where the water had dried.
